Shashi Tharoor shares the difference between nationalism and patriotism

New Delhi, 2/10: Congress leader and MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor has counted the difference between nationalism and patriotism. He has said that while a patriot is ready to die for his native land. At the same time, the nationalist also gets ready to kill anyone for the sake of the state system. He has spoken of having civil nationalism in India. At the same time, he has appealed to the countrymen to fight such a nationalist mindset, which accepts differences, diversity and adopts plurality. He said that only with this inclusive nationalism, Indian, religion, region or mother tongue, will get the freedom to be patriot.

Politician and author of several English books, Shashi Tharoor, in an article written for the Hindi daily, Dainik Bhaskar, said, ‘Nationalism is nationalism i.e. devotion to the state system, while Patriotism is patriotism i.e. love for the native land.’ He wrote that comparison with nationalism. If done, patriotism runs on less ideology. At the same time, a patriot loves his land and does not tell it greater than any other place.
