Covid cases in India on a steady rise, 257 active cases

There has been a steady rise of Covid cases in India. Reports say that there were as many as 257 active cases as on May 19, 2025. States such as Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have reported several active cases. It is further worth mentioning that, Health authorities are concerned over a new variant called JN 1 across parts of Asia. The JN.1 strain is a descendant of the BA.2.86 variant (an Omicron sub-variant). Reports said that, 15 Covid patients have been identified in Gujarat. On Thursday, the state health department informed that 15 Covid positives have been reported. While all the patients are currently under quarantine, 13 cases are there in Ahmedabad city and two in rural areas. The health department has said that if you have a cold or cough, you should consult a doctor immediately. So far, more than 257 new corona cases have been reported across the country. Kerala has the highest number of cases at 192, Maharashtra at 56, Tamil Nadu at 66, Karnataka at 13, Delhi at five, Rajasthan at two, Gujarat at 15, Haryana at four and Sikkim at one. Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalization required. The country also has a robust system for surveillance of respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR. The Union Health Ministry remains vigilant and proactive in monitoring the situation closely, following the Covid concern in India ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to safeguard public health. Those infected with Covid JN 1 experience mild upper respiratory symptoms. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat, headaches, extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, exhaustion and minor gastrointestinal problems. In some cases, there may be loss of appetite and persistent nausea. Symptoms are usually mild and typically improve within four to five days. Health experts advise washing hands regularly, wearing a mask and following other Covid 19 precautions to prevent oneself from being infected. It is worth mentioning here that there have been two Covid deaths in Maharashtra. But both the deceased had severe comorbidities.
