Bhubaneswar, June 7, 2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, presented a stellar showcase of its diverse Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives at the State-Level World Environment Day & Prakruti Mitra Award Ceremony, organised by the Forest, Environment & Climate Change Department, Government of Odisha, on June 5 at the Krushi Shiksha Sadan, Bhubaneswar. The event brought together a diverse range of government and industry leaders, policymakers, and environmental champions to recognise industry efforts towards ensuring ecological preservation and climate resilience.
As part of the celebration, Vedanta Aluminium set up an engaging stall highlighting its extensive environmental and climate stewardship initiatives, demonstrating how responsible business practices can be intertwined with the urgent need to protect the planet. On this theme, It presented milestones achieved by the company in areas such as water management, circular economy, rural infrastructure, and resource efficiencies.
The stall was graced by Shri. Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha, who observed and appreciated the diverse measures undertaken by Vedanta Aluminium to ensure sustainable operations in every aspect. In addition, several leaders and senior officers graced Vedanta’s stall with their presence, including Shri. Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Hon’ble Minister of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Labour & Employees State Insurance – Odisha, Shri. Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary – Odisha and Chairman – State Pollution Control Board (SPCB)Odisha, Smt. Uma Nanduri, Member Secretary, SPCB, Odisha and Dr. K. Murugesan, Additional Principal, Chief Conservator of Forests (Nodal) in Odisha.
The centrepiece was a working model that showcased the cutting-edge environmental safeguards in place across the company’s mega aluminium manufacturing plant in Jharsuguda. These included the Hybrid Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) with Bag Filters – which helps minimize emissions in keeping with both national and international standards and is the only such technological intervention in Odisha.The model also depicted the plant’s Ash Railway Siding with Wind Barriers, which aids in the sustainable usage of fly ash, reducing wastage and environmental impact. Further, the model portrayed the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) with Reverse Osmosis& MEE (Multiple Effect Evaporator) system, which ensures zero liquid wastewater discharge from the company’s operations.

In addition, the company undertook several impactful initiatives across Odisha, including large-scale plantation drives that saw the planting of over 1.2 lakh saplings around its operational sites. To further promote environmental awareness, the company organized a series of engaging activities such as street plays and employee-led events, including a nature photography exhibition.
Through technology-enabled solutions, community-centric programmes, and a strong environmental governance framework, Vedanta Aluminium continues to lead Odisha’s journey in sustainable industrial growth.The companyconserved over 16 billion litres of water in FY25 through rainwater harvesting, process water recycling, and zero liquid discharge systems. Its flagship initiative, Project Sangam, has createdmore than 30 new community waterbodies across Lanjigarh, which has the potential to ensure irrigation facilities to around 200 acres of land, round the year.
The companyhas also implemented technologies such as a mega Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant at its Jharsuguda operations, as part of its Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) philosophy – ensuring that all wastewater is treated and reused within the plant. In addition, the company has achieved133% fly ash utilizationby partnering with industriesfor cement production, brick manufacturing, and mine backfilling. More than 5.5 lakh trees have been planted in and around its operations in Odisha within the past three years, enriching biodiversity and strengthening the state’s green cover.
