Rayagada, : Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL), a unit of Hindalco Industries under the Aditya
Birla Group, has taken a significant step towards ensuring access to safe drinking water in
remote areas of Odisha. As part of its commitment to community welfare, the company
inaugurated two Swajal water supply projects and five solar-powered tube wells in
Kaliacanchera and Rayalaghaty villages under Kodipari Panchayat of Kashipur block in
Rayagada district.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Mr. Vijay Chauhan, Mines Head of Utkal Alumina,
along with officials from the company’s CSR department. These projects aim to address the
long-standing issue of lack of safe drinking water in the region.
For years, villagers have been dependent on streams and open sources for drinking water,
thereby consuming contaminated water. This has led to frequent outbreaks of waterborne
diseases such as diarrhoea, with some cases even resulting in hospitalisation and death.
Understanding the consequences of the situation, Utkal Alumina stepped forward to provide a
sustainable solution. The two functional Swajal projects will now provide safe drinking water
at the doorstep of villagers. Additionally, the five newly operational solar-powered tube wells
will ensure regular access to water using renewable energy.
The residents have expressed immense satisfaction and gratitude. "People of our village have
long suffered due to the lack of clean drinking water, especially during monsoons when
natural water sources get polluted," said Malia Majhi, a local resident. "Now, for the first
time, we will be able to drink safe water, thanks to Utkal Alumina's initiative."
This initiative is part of Utkal Alumina’s broader effort to improve the quality of life in
surrounding communities through need-based, sustainable, and people-centric interventions.
