Cuttack: Hirakud opens 20 gates, floodwaters to reach Mundali barrage tomorrow late night

Cuttack: The Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district today opened a total of 20 sluice gates and released season’s first floodwaters, which is expected to reach the Mundali barrage in Cuttack tomorrow late night. Cuttack Collector Dattatreya Bhausahe Shinde informed that the district administration has taken all possible measures to receive season’s first floodwaters from the Hirakud reservoir which is likely to reach the Mundali barrage tomorrow late night. In view of this, the control rooms at both Mundali and Naraj barrages have been put on alert to keep a close vigil on the rising water levels, he said. Shinde also informed that not even a single river embankment in the district is in a weak condition as the special team of concerned officials has already conducted a survey of the embankments. However, the floodwaters from the Mahanadi River enter a locality in Banki area of the district. Taking a note of this, the local residents have been put on alert and decision has been taken to provide drinking water through water tankers in case river water enters the locality. This apart, all the cyclone/flood shelters across the district have been kept on alert and people will be shifted there, if required, the Cuttack Collector intimated.
