Tokyo, 2/8: Indian women’s hockey team has created history in the Olympics. The team has made it to the semi-finals for the first time. India beat Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals. The women’s team is entering the Olympics for only the third time. The team finished 12th in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Apart from this, the team was at number four in 1980. Although there were no semi-final matches at that time. The top-3 teams were decided on the basis of the performance of the pool matches. Earlier, the Indian men’s team also kept the medal hope alive by reaching the semi-finals.
Indian women’s team started well in the match. However, both India and Australia could not score in the first quarter. Gurjit Kaur scored a penalty corner in the 22nd minute to give India a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same till half time. There were no goals in the third quarter as well and the Indian team was ahead 1-0. In the fourth quarter, Australia’s team attacked strongly and also got two consecutive corners. She got a total of 9 penalty corners in the match, but she could not score on it. The Indian team got only one corner and scored a goal on it and ensured victory.
