New Delhi, 31/8: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Raman on Tuesday administered the oath of office to nine new judges, including three women judges, as judges of the Supreme Court. This is the first time in the history of the apex court that nine judges took the oath of office together. The swearing-in ceremony took place in the auditorium of the building complex in addition to the Supreme Court. Traditionally, the oath of office to new judges is administered in the courtroom of the Chief Justice. With nine new judges taking oath on Tuesday, the number of judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, increased to 33. The Supreme Court can have a total of 34 judges, including the CJI.
Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka (who was the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court), Justice Vikram Nath (who was the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court), Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari among the nine new judges who were sworn in as judges of the apex court. (who was the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court), Justice Hima Kohli (who was the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court) and Justice B. V. Nagarathna (who was a judge of the Karnataka High Court).
