WHO may give approval to COVAXIN soon

New Delhi, 5/10:India’s indigenous vaccine Covaxin (COVAXIN) is expected to get the approval of the World Health Organization (WHO) next week. A major meeting of independent experts with the WHO will be held next week in which a final decision will be taken on whether to approve the vaccine for emergency use. During this meeting, every aspect including the side effects of the vaccine will be discussed.

Covaccine has been developed jointly by the pharma company Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research. Bharat Biotech has provided all the data related to the authorization of the vaccine to the WHO. On September 27, the company had provided additional data. WHO has said that a decision can be taken on this next week.

Earlier there was news that on October 5, ie today, a decision can be taken on the approval of the vaccine. The WHO has so far approved emergency use of vaccines manufactured by major US pharmaceutical companies Pfizer-BioNtech, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, China’s Sinopharm and Oxford-AstraZeneca. Covaccine is one of six vaccines that have received emergency use approval from India’s drug regulator and are being used along with Kovishield and Sputnik V in the nationwide immunization programme.
