New Delhi, 14/11: The tenure of the chiefs of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been increased to five years from the current two years. In view of this, two separate ordinances were issued on Sunday.
According to the ordinance, if the extension of service after completion of two years in office is approved by the selection committee, then the tenure can be extended for one year at a time. This change came into effect through an ordinance amending the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
In another similar ordinance, a provision has been made to extend the tenure of the ED chief by five years by amending the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003. However, under this, the tenure can be extended only once in a year.
