Personal Data protection bill: Companies to pay 15 crores fine if personal data is leaked

New Delhi, 17/12: Preparations are underway to crack down on social media companies regarding data leaks. On Thursday, the report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Personal Data Protection Bill was presented in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. The parliamentary committee has recommended several provisions in the law to prevent data leaks. Under this, it has been said that if there is a data breach, that is, if the data is leaked, then a fine of up to 15 crores will be imposed on the companies. Or else 4% of the turnover will be charged from the company as a fine. Companies will have to pay Rs 5 crore or 2 per cent of the global turnover for small violations.

If these provisions are included in the law by the government, then companies like Facebook, Instagram, Google and Amazon will have to be very cautious about data in India. The Personal Data Protection Bill has all the provisions of 2019 itself. Also, it has been prepared under the European Union General Data Protection Regulation.

This bill was introduced two years ago by former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in the Lok Sabha on December 11, 2019. Was sent to the Standing Committee on 16 December. The report of the committee was presented in the Lok Sabha by its chairman PP Choudhary.
