Cyclone Dana scare: Onion and Potato prices skyrocket in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar

Cuttack: Panic buying has been seen in Odisha due to the probable cyclone Dana scare. Onion and potato prices have skyrocketed in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, said reports on Tuesday. According to latest reports, onion and potato prices have skyrocket in Cuttack Chatrabazar and Bhubaneswar Unit-1 Haat. Potatoes are being sold at Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 per kilogram whereas onions are being sold at Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 per kilogram.It is worth mentioning that, the Odisha government has clearly stated that black-marketing and hoarding of onion and potato is strictly prohibited and shall draw legal action and fines. Ignoring the government’s orders, the traders are selling vegetables at exorbitant prices.The residents of the capital city of Bhubaneswar are gathering at various vegetable haats and market places to buy and store everything at home before the storm hits. Similarly, in Cuttack’s Chatrabazar, there is a massive crowd, some unscrupulous businessmen are taking advantage of the panic of the common people.Yesterday in Bhubaneswar potato was Rs. 32 per kilogram whereas today it has reached Rs. 40 to Rs. 45 per kg. Similarly, potato and onion prices are high in Cuttack Chatrabazar. Potatoes are sold for Rs. 40 to Rs. 50 per kg and onions for Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 per kg. The situation is the same in Unit-1 haat of the capital city of Bhubaneswar. Crowds of people have been seen here and they are buying and stocking up on rice, pulses, oil and other cooking items.In view of the possible storm, Minister of Supply Krishnachandra Patra has banned black marketing. He has clearly said, “Strict action will be taken if dishonest traders engage in black market.” The Minister of Supply has instructed the departmental officials to keep a strict watch on the black market of essential food items.
