Bhubaneswar, 26/11/2024: The 12th World Vasectomy Day was observed in Odisha on 26th Nov 2024 at the presence of Hon’ble Minister, Health and Family Welfare, Parliamentary Affairs and Electronics & IT, Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, Commissioner cum Secretary to Health & Family Welfare department, Ms Awasthi S, Among others, Director Health & Family Welfare, Dr Sanjukta Sahoo, State Institute of Health and Family Welfare (SIHFW), Dr Amarendra Mohanty, Additional Director – Maternal Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Murlidhar Padhi, etc attended the ceremony.
It is an event to raise global awareness of vasectomy as a permanent solution to prevent unintended pregnancies and also as a way of promoting male engagement in family planning. In India, based on the experience from the overwhelming success of Vasectomy Fortnight and to emphasise on reviving male participation in family planning, it was decided to celebrate World Vasectomy Fortnight during 21st November to 4th December 2024 in two phases; Mobilization phase (21st to 27th Nov) and Service Delivery phase (28th Nov to 4th Dec) across Odisha at all blocks, districts and State headquarter.
On this occasion, the Health and Family Welfare Department expressed satisfaction, stating, “I am very happy to see male vasectomy gaining popularity in districts like Balasore, Rayagada, and Koraput. Recognizing the commendable efforts of doctors, ANMs, and ASHA workers, it has been decided that, starting next year, their felicitation will include monetary rewards. Furthermore, efforts should be made to promote male vasectomy in districts like Sundargarh and Kandhamal. While women have been actively participating in family planning initiatives, this program aims to increase the involvement of men in family planning as well.”
This year World Vasectomy Day is being observed with the launching of “Vasectomy Fortnight” or “Purusha bandhyakaran pakhya” and felicitation of best performing service providers, counsellors and managers for Vasectomy services.
This year’s slogan at different level is: ‘Êûcú Èú còkòZ bûùa Ke«ê @ûe¸, _eòaûe ^òùdûR^e gêbûe¸’
Population stabilization movement in Odisha was revitalized in the year 2010, and our state has significantly improved the family planning services delivery, both in quality and quantity since then. Along with these steps special focus is being given to promote male participation in family planning. In order to take this initiative, forward a number of measures have been taken by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, government of Odisha in the upcoming Vasectomy Fortnight.
