GRP seize 60 kg of silver ornaments from Rourkela railway station

In a major bust against alleged illegal smuggling, the Government Railway Police (GRP) on Wednesday seized 60 kg of silver ornaments at Rourkela police station.A man, named Chandan Kumar was apprehended while illegally transporting the silver and was handed over to the GST department today for further investigation after failing to provide any satisfactory answer.Sources stated that the man was reportedly en route from Agra to Ranchi in Jharkhand and had made a brief stopover in Rourkela, claiming a lack of direct trains to his destination. After preliminary probing by the GST department, the man reiterated his stance that the silver ornaments were for personal use and purchased through legitimate sources.Jagadish Chandra Saha, Deputy Commissioner of Rourkela GST Department offered further clarifications in the matter by adding that Chandan Kumar claimed to have bought about 51 kg of silver in Agra and provided invoices to verify the same.He also stated that during his stopover in Rourkela, he made an additional purchase of some 10 kg of silver biscuits but could not produce an invoice for the same.“We have received his statements but there are a lot of discrepancies in his provided invoice slips. It cannot be cleared right away if the large quantities of silver seized from the man are stolen and the exact details would only be made available after a detailed probe,” stated Saha.
