Bangladesh secretariat fire: Several documents burnt, foul play suspected

Dhaka: A massive fire broke out in the Bangladesh Secretariat main building in the capital city of Dhaka on Thursday. Many important documents of three ministries were burnt to ashes in the fire. Officials have formed a high-level investigation committee, suspecting it to be a conspiracy.  The fire broke out in Building No. 7 of the Secretariat and it took about six hours to control the fire. Officials said that the fire broke out inside the ministry located in the high-rise building on Thursday morning. But fortunately, no lives were lost. Fire brigade teams reached the spot after receiving information about the fire. Fire Service Chief Brigadier General Zahid Kamal said that the fire broke out in three separate places simultaneously. Therefore, it is not believed to be an accident. The fire has also disrupted the work of other ministries as power supply to the building has been cut off. Agencies have banned entry to the building premises due to the Bangladesh secretariat fire restricting the movement of employees and officials. Officials said the sixth, seventh and eighth floors of the building were badly damaged. The fire also gutted documents belonging to the local government and the posts and telecom ministries. Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuyan, an advisor to the government, said the documents destroyed in the fire contained evidence of corruption worth lakhs of rupees. If anyone is found to be involved in the incident, they will not be able to take action.
