Jasprit Bumrah likely to skip majority of England series due to injury, severity still unknown

Jasprit Bumrah’s injury woes are back, this time threatening to scuttle plans for the forthcoming England series and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. His troubles began on the Australia tour when a nasty case of back spasms kept him off the field for the entire second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney. The BCCI would like Bumrah to be completely fit for the Champions Trophy in February-March and could also decide to send him for a major part of the England series. How severe the injury is, no one knows yet, and that decision will depend on the seriousness of the injury. This fresh injury has now cast a doubt over Bumrah’s workload and the excessive reliance on him by the Indian team.Bumrah has been quite spectacular during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests, bagging 32 wickets with an average of 13.06. Still, an injury would concern how Bumrah manages the test of international cricket. In case Bumrah is graded a Grade 1, recovery should be well past two-three weeks for competitive action. A Grade 2 injury would mean six weeks of rehabilitation, while a Grade 3 injury would keep him out of action for three months.India will play a five-match T20I series against England, starting January 22, followed by three ODIs. Bumrah was expected to miss the T20Is but was likely to play in two of the three ODIs to prepare for the Champions Trophy. However, seriousness of his injury will now decide his availability for the ODI series. Champions Trophy starts from February 19 and Indian openers take the field to face Bangladesh in the match at Dubai on February 20.
