Madhya Pradesh: Viral video of fraudsters replacing QR codes outside shops

Madhya Pradesh: In a brazen scam, scamsters in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh replaced the original QR codes with fake QR codes in more than dozens of shops and diverted money into their personal bank accounts. The scam busted when Omvati Gupta a shopkeeper felt that there are some suspicious entries during transactions when she was handling payments at Gupta’s medical store. A customer in a hurry trying to make payments at Gupta’s medical store was shocked by seeing the ‘Chhotu Tiwari’ name where it should reflect the details about her shop.The scam was not just limited to Gupta’s shop but several other business houses including one local petrol pump reported the same incident. Narayan Market had a trader losing Rs 985 to the fraudsters and a shopkeeper claiming a loss of Rs 1. Fake QR codes were seen at Bade Bhaiya Paan Wale and Resham Kirana, which got removed once the shopkeepers came to know about the scam.CCTV footage of Gupta’s medical store caught three men sticking fake QR codes over the originals at several shops and the petrol pump. Police apprehended one of the suspects, Chhotu Tiwari, within 72 hours of the complaint. Tiwari resides in Aamli village, Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh. The police suspect others may be part of the operation and are working on arresting them.According to Chhatarpur SP Aagam Jain, the fraudsters could escape with around Rs 1,700. Two more suspects are still at large, and police are studying bank transactions to track them down.
