Padma Shri Award row in Odisha: Petitioner appears before High Court, journalist skips summons on health ground

Cuttack: Dr. Antarayami Mishra, a physician who had filed a writ petition at the Orissa High Court following a row over the Padma Shri Award in Odisha, appeared before the court today while his opposition party, Antaryami Mishra, who is a journalist by profession, skipped the court summons on health ground. Based on the writ petition filed by physician Antarayami Mishra over the Padma Shri Award row, the Orissa High Court had summoned both the physician and journalist asking them to appear before it physically on February 24. Today, the High Court bench of Dr. Justice Sanjiv Kumar Panigrahi conducted a hearing over the issue. However, only physician Antarayami Mishra appeared before it physically and produced all 29 books he has written in Odia and other Indian languages. On the other hand, journalist Antaryami Mishra could not be present before the court physically due to health issues and sought time from the court. While scheduling the next hearing of the case to March 18, the High Court bench directed the opposition party, journalist Antaryami Mishra, to physically present along with all publications and materials to substantiate his claims before the next hearing. It is to be noted here that row over the prestigious award started after both the individuals with the same name (physician Antarayami Mishra and journalist Antaryami Mishra) claimed to have been included in the awardee list of Padma Shri Award 2023 for literature. Physician Antarayami Mishra moved the High Court after journalist Antaryami Mishra received the award from President of India. The High Court was surprised while hearing the case as two individuals claimed themselves to be the awardee even after all kinds of verifications was done by the governments before the announcement of the Padma Shri awardees’ list.
