Dolphin census report out, 710 dolphins in Odisha, check details

Bhubaneswar: The report of the latest dolphin census in Odisha is out. As per the census, Odisha has 710 numbers of dolphins. Out of this 505 are present in Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha. As per the latest dolphin census in Odisha, dolphin number has increased in Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha. As many as 505 dolphins were counted this year. This year, the number of dolphins has increased by 3 compared to last year. Earlier, Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha have made a special mark on the world tourism map for their habitats of the common crocodile and Olive Ridley turtle. Now, there is another addition to it as a habitat for dolphins. From the census report it has been revealed that the highest number of dolphins and highest species of dolphins are found in Odisha. According to the census report this year, while 710 dolphins were counted in the whole of Odisha, 505 dolphins were counted in Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha alone. The census report shows that 4 species of dolphins have been seen. The dolphin census was conducted in the world-famous Bhitarkanika National Park and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary for 3 days from January 27 to 29. Nine census teams counted dolphins from Dhamra mouth to Devi mouth, in the sea and in the rivers and canals within Bhitarkanika. Since so many dolphins are seen in Bhitarkanika every year, this has created an opportunity for Bhitarkanika and Gahirmatha. Chilika lagoon continues to be home to the largest congregation of Irrawaddy Dolphins in the world. The latest census results puts the numbers at 159, informed Susanta Nanda in an X post today.
