Papua New Guinea: A 6.9 magnitude earthquake on Richter scale hit Papua New Guinea on Saturday morning (local time 1.34.43 IST). The earthquake gave an alarm to Tsunami which was later cancelled by US Geological survey. According to National Centre of Seismology, the quake was shallow. The quake struck the Pacific Island nation at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles) on Saturday morning. The quake was centred offshore, 194 km east of town of Kimbe, on the New Britain Island. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at6.23 degrees South Latitude and 151.64 degrees East Longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometres. The Pacific Tsunami Warning centre issued a tsunami just after the quake which was later cancelled. The NCS immediately issued tsunami after the quake warned of waves of 1 to 3 metres along some parts of the Papua New Guinea. An alert of smaller waves of 0.3 issued for Nearby Solomon Island, was also withdrawn by the Tsunami Warning Center. There are no immediate reports of damage as of now.
