Bijnor: In a shocking incident, a groom was allegedly locked and beaten up by the family of the bride in Uttar Pradesh after a minor argument turned ugly. According to reliable reports, an altercation broke out between two families in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district as the groom allegedly gave only Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 50,000. The groom has been identified as Muhammad Shabir. The groom had promised to give Rs. 50,000 to the bride’s family in the ritual in which the bride’s younger siblings hide his shoes as part of a ‘joota chupai’ or hiding shoes during the wedding. The ritual acts as a ice-breaker between the groom and the bride’s siblings and friends. That the groom did not pay the amount agreed upon a priori, he was called a beggar by the women from the bride’s side. They were angered further and then the groom was locked up in a room and was badly beaten up by the bride’s family with sticks. However on the other side, the bride’s family alleged that they were questioned by Shabir’s family about the quality of gold that had been given. This angered them and things took and ugly turn. Later the situation was sorted out in the presence of the Najibabad police team. A statement each has been recorded by the police.
