Kolkata: The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with the teachers who lost their jobs. The Supreme Court had on April 3 upheld the Calcutta High Court’s order cancelling the appointment of over 25,000 staff in Bengal’s schools by the SSC. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, “There is a conspiracy going on to destroy the education system. Teachers of classes 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th are the gateways to higher education.” She further added, “Many (teachers) are gold medalists, they have achieved great results in their lives, and you are calling them thieves. You are calling them incompetent, Who gave you this right? Who is playing this game.” It is worth mentioning that, the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court’s decision to cancel the recruitment of more than 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff by the SSC in 2016 for state-run and state-aided schools. “We find no valid ground or reason to interfere with the decision of the High Court that services of tainted candidates must be terminated”, a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna said while pronouncing the verdict.
