NPPA announces price hike in 800 essential drugs

New Delhi, 28/3: After the increase in the prices of petrol, diesel and gas, consumers are now going to get another booster dose of inflation. For the treatment of diseases, now more pockets will have to be loosened because from April 1, there will be a huge increase of 11 percent in the price of more than 800 essential medicines. The National Pharma Pricing Authority (NPPA) on Monday announced a hike in prices.

The medicines whose prices have been increased are counted in the category of essential medicines. They come under the National Essential List of Medicine (NLEM). The revised policy of the National Essential List of Medicine came into force in the year 2013. Since then, this is the biggest ever increase (of 10.76 per cent) in the prices of essential medicines. NPPA has earlier increased the price of these drugs by 4 percent.

Which medicines will be expensive

The essential medicines category includes over 800 medicines, including antibiotics, decongestants, ear-nose and throat medicines, antiseptics, anti-inflammatory drugs, pain and gas medicines. These include paracetamol used in fever and Azithromycin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. Medicines to overcome the deficiency of folic acid, vitamins and minerals also fall in this category.
