Government lifts white rice ban, exporters hail move

New Delhi: The government on Friday removed the ban on exporting non-basmati white rice, effective immediately, a decision welcomed by exporters.

The ban was initially implemented in July 2023 to secure the domestic rice supply and regulate prices.“India’s decisive action to lift the export restrictions on non-basmati white rice marks a significant turning point for the agricultural industry,” stated Suraj Agarwal, CEO of Rice Villa, an exporting firm.“He added, “This tactical shift will not only enhance the earnings of exporters but also strengthen farmers, who are likely to see increased profits with the upcoming new kharif crop.”Furthermore, the government has cut the export duty on parboiled rice from 20 per cent to 10 per cent. Keshav Kr Halder of the Halder Group, another exporter who advocated for the ban’s immediate revocation, has commended the government’s decision.
