KIMS Installs Eastern India’s First Cardiac Laser Machine to Treat Complex Heart Diseases
Bhubaneswar: Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has installed a state-of-the-art Xenon Chloride Fusion Cardiac Laser Machine – a first in eastern India — to treat complex heart diseases and reduce the use of stents.
The advanced laser system, inaugurated by KIIT and KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta, will aid in performing coronary and peripheral atherectomy, lead management, and the removal of blockages that are otherwise untreatable by conventional angioplasty.
Dr. Anupam Jena, Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiology said that through this laser machine, “we can perform ultra-modern treatments that were previously unavailable in this region. This system allows us to offer international-standard cardiac care at KIMS. Patients with complex heart diseases, whether they have arterial blockages or require pacemaker lead removal, will greatly benefit from this technology,” he said.
Highlighting the benefits of the machine, Dr. Jena added, “This laser system is particularly beneficial for younger patients in their 20s and 30s. It can dissolve clogs and calcium deposits without the need for stents, which often carry their own set of complications. In some cases, stent placement can be avoided altogether, preserving the heart’s natural anatomy and ensuring better long-term outcomes.”
Prof. Subasish Mishra, Head of the Department of Cardiology at KIMS, elaborated on the advantages of the technology. “This machine allows us to dissolve blood clots and blockages that are resistant to standard procedures. It significantly improves the management of complex coronary diseases and enhances patient care by reducing the risks associated with stents.”
The installation of this laser machine was made possible through the dedicated efforts and support of Dr. Samanta. “With this addition, KIMS is now equipped to provide advanced cardiac care that matches the best facilities globally,” Dr. Jena added.
