Cuttack: Justice Harish Tandon has been appointed as the new Orissa High Court Chief Justice, said reports on Friday. The President has appointed him on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the Central Government to appoint Justice Tandon as the Chief Justice. Justice Tandon is currently the senior-most judge in the Calcutta High Court. The post of Chief Justice of Odisha High Court has been vacant since January 19 after Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh retired from the Odisha High Court. Since then, Justice Arindam Sinha has been performing the duties as the acting Chief Justice. The Supreme Court Collegium yesterday recommended that Justice Arindam Sinha be transferred as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. Justice Harish Tandon is currently the seventh senior-most High Court Judge in India. Justice Tandon was born on November 16, 1964. After graduating from the University of Calcutta in 1983, he obtained his LLB degree from the same university in 1989. He enrolled as an advocate on 26 September of the same year and started practicing. He is an expert in handling civil cases. He was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on 13 April 2010. Since then, he has served as a judge of the Calcutta High Court and has delivered many landmark judgments. The Union Government has sent the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium for the appointment of Justice Tandon to the President, who has appointed him as the Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court. The official notice of the Government read as follows, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Harish Tandon, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
