Assam, 3/4 (AO Bureau)Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Assam government and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, has moved the High Court on the Election Commission’s decision to ban him from campaigning on his own. Let the Election Commission on Friday barred Sarma from campaigning for 48 hours with immediate effect in the case of allegedly threatening statements against Bodoland People’s Front (BDF) President H Mohilari. Sarma has approached the Guwahati Highcourt in this matter. According to the information received, a hearing will be held in this matter in some time.
The Election Commission said in its order, ‘The Commission strongly condemns the statements of Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Commission prohibits any of their public meetings, holding public processions, holding rallies, roadshows, interviews, and making public statements in the media for 48 hours on April 2 (Friday) with immediate effect.
Prohibition on promotion and related activities till 4 April
Sarma has been barred from doing publicity and related activities till April 4. The campaigning for the third and final phase of polling in Assam will stop on the evening of April 4 while the voting will take place on April 6.
