Berhampur, Jul 31: In a remarkable display of swift coordination and emergency response, Odisha Police and doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital saved the life of a 10-year-old boy after creating an 80-km green corridor for his urgent transfer from Puri district to Berhampur.The boy, identified as Prabhudatta Jena, a Class V student, sustained a critical abdominal injury on Wednesday after falling from his bicycle while returning home from school at Patharakata village under Krushna Prasad police station limits in Puri district. During the accident, the bicycle’s brake rod pierced his lower abdomen, leaving him seriously injured.Local residents immediately rushed the child to the Krushna Prasad Community Health Centre. After evaluating his condition, doctors referred him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for specialised treatment without delay.Responding promptly, Odisha Police established an 80-km green corridor from Krushna Prasad to Berhampur, ensuring uninterrupted passage for the ambulance despite heavy evening traffic. The ambulance covered the distance in just about one hour and 45 minutes.Police also alerted authorities at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in advance, enabling the medical team to remain fully prepared before the patient arrived.A specialised team led by Dr. Manas Ranjan Sahu, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, immediately took charge of the case. The child underwent an emergency surgery that lasted nearly two and a half hours.Following the successful operation, Prabhudatta was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains under close observation. Doctors said his condition is stable and he is expected to remain under monitoring for the next three days.Sharing details of the rescue, Odisha Police said on its official X handle that when every second mattered, officers acted swiftly to create the green corridor, allowing the ambulance to reach the hospital without delay. The police described the operation as a reflection of its commitment to saving lives beyond its routine law enforcement duties.Doctors credited the boy’s survival to the timely transportation made possible through the coordinated efforts of the police and healthcare teams, highlighting how rapid emergency response can make the difference between life and death.
