Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field incident during the opening day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, part of the ICC World Test Championship.According to the ICC, both players breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which prohibits “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).” As a result, Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25 per cent of their match fees and received one demerit point. Neither had committed a previous offence in the 24 months prior to the incident.The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The two players exchanged words, after which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. Jaiswal then leaned forward, causing head-to-head contact between them.Both Jaiswal and Fernando admitted to the Code of Conduct breaches and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thereby avoiding formal hearings.Regarding the match, India reached 475 for eight wickets before rain ended play early on the second day. Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 95, five runs short of his first Test century, having added 36 runs during the second session. India lost Rishabh Pant for 69 off the first ball after lunch, and Manav Suthar was later dismissed for 18. Pant and Jurel had earlier shared a 112-run partnership, while Devdutt Padikkal scored 117 and Shubman Gill made 50, helping India take a strong position on the first day
