A man from Bhadrak’s Chandbali area, who was stranded in Nepal amid devastating flash floods, has returned home and recounted the terrifying ordeal that left him fearing for his life and family.Ramesh Das of Nalgunda village in Chandbali block had travelled to Nepal on August 21. However, his trip took a dangerous turn after the region was hit by a massive flash flood, leaving him stranded amid the destruction.Recalling the frightening experience after reaching Bhadrak, Das said he witnessed floodwater rapidly rushing behind vehicles as they tried to move to safety. The situation became so terrifying that he feared he might never see his family again.“I can never forget what I saw in Nepal in my lifetime,” Das said, describing the moments of panic. He recalled how people inside the vehicle broke down and started crying as the floodwaters surged dangerously close.Das and others eventually managed to protect themselves inside a hotel while the disaster unfolded outside. After returning safely to Bhadrak, he became emotional upon meeting his younger brother at the Bhadrak railway station.“I am not happy at all, despite having travelled to Nepal to enjoy the trip. We were a group of 51 people travelling by bus towards Kathmandu when army personnel stopped us. While returning, we saw hundreds of dead bodies, damaged houses and vehicles, including buses and trucks, that had been swept away by the floodwaters. For a moment, I feared that I would never see my family again. I could not even contact them because there was no network,” said Das.Das said the scale of destruction and the speed at which the floodwaters swept through the area left him deeply shaken. He later narrated how they struggled to remain safe as Nepal witnessed the devastating impact of the floods.His account highlights the fear, uncertainty and desperation faced by those caught in the middle of the disaster.
