The Orissa High Court has granted conditional bail to Bhimsen Prasad Tudu, the former OT&AS trainee arrested in connection with the death of medical student Chandrika Hembram on Thursday. The court granted him bail against two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.Tudu has been in jail since his arrest on June 13. His lawyer told the court that police have already questioned him from all possible angles and have filed the chargesheet. The lawyer argued that keeping him in jail any longer would not help the investigation.Court Puts Conditions On BailThe defence also said Tudu would not run away or break the law after getting bail. His lawyer assured the court that he would cooperate with the investigation and follow all the conditions.The court has barred Tudu from meeting or speaking to the witnesses in the case. If any witness finds that he has broken this condition, they can approach the court and inform it about the matter.Tudu was taken on police remand twice during the investigation. Police had questioned him about his relationship with Chandrika and their last meeting before her death.Chandrika died by suicide on June 4, 2026. Her body was recovered from the Kathajodi river under Barang police limits of Odisha. After identifying her body, her family alleged that Tudu was responsible for the circumstances that led to her death. Police then registered a case of abetment of suicide against him.Tudu was an OT&AS trainee at the time. He went missing after the case was registered and was arrested from Mayurbhanj on June 13.During questioning, Tudu admitted that he had met Chandrika while they were staying in Bhubaneswar. Police also found that the two had met shortly before her death. He was also accused of having a physical relationship with Chandrika after allegedly promising to marry her. The investigation later found that he had refused to marry her.Following his arrest, Tudu was suspended on the direction of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The government also said he would not be eligible for any government job in future.
