Will orangutans leave Odisha? Deputy CM Pravati Parida responds

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia reviewed the health condition of the orangutans at Nandankanan Zoological Park. The orangutans are in good health, with their weight increasing and their earlier anaemia showing improvement, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said. Parida said suitable arrangements have been made at Nandankanan for the care of the orangutans. She also said there was no truth in the ongoing discussion about the orangutans being sent back from Odisha. The Deputy Chief Minister reviewed their condition along with the Forest and Environment Minister and officials at Nandankanan. Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said Nandankanan is taking care of the orangutans like a second mother. He said a five-member technical team is monitoring their health and behaviour. The minister also said tourists may get an opportunity to see the orangutans at Nandankanan in the future, along with the zoo’s development and beautification. Meanwhile, the Deputy Director of Nandankanan said the process for DNA testing of the orangutans will begin next week after approval is received from the committee. The committee will decide which agency will conduct the testing of the samples, the Deputy Director said.
