Earlier that morning, Parmelin and his wife, Caroline Parmelin, paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi during a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also engaged with the Swiss head of state to discuss future joint initiatives. These meetings build upon consistent diplomatic outreach following previous high-level interactions, including Prime Minister Modi’s official trips to Bern in 2016 and 2018.Trade and Economic Partnership Progress.Focusing heavily on commerce, both leaders celebrated the upcoming first anniversary of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). This expansive free trade pact connects India with four European Free Trade Association members, specifically Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Signed on March 10, 2024, the accord officially took effect on October 1, 2025. Parmelin emphasized that this diplomatic exchange offers an excellent opportunity to evaluate joint progress and shape future economic strategies. He noted how shared democratic values naturally bind the two dynamic countries together.Expanding Bilateral Investment and Innovation.Switzerland remains India’s primary trade and investment partner among EFTA member states. Recognizing this critical financial standing, Parmelin brought a prominent delegation of senior officials and corporate executives to New Delhi. This high-level group aims to enhance bilateral collaboration across scientific advancement, technological innovation, and workforce mobility. The visit marks Parmelin’s second journey to India this year, following his earlier participation in the AI Impact Summit.To conclude these initial meetings, President Murmu will host a formal ceremonial banquet honoring the Swiss leader.
