Joburg Super Kings secure teenager Jason Rowles as top pick at SA20 Season 5 auction

The SA20 Season 5 player auction concluded on October 7 in Johannesburg with the four remaining franchises finalising their squads. The event featured a combination of established international stars and promising young South African talent.Joburg Super Kings (JSK) made the most expensive acquisition of the auction by securing 18-year-old Jason Rowles for $174,248 USD following a competitive bidding war with MI Cape Town. Rowles, a St David’s Marist Inanda matriculant and rain Schools SA20 graduate, was highlighted for his long-term potential and regarded as the standout purchase of the day.Former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis also commanded significant interest before JSK signed him for $162,286 USD. The 42-year-old, central to a bidding contest between JSK and MI Cape Town, will return to the Wanderers where he has spent the past four SA20 seasons. He will be joined by West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, the all-time leading run-scorer in men’s T20 cricket history, who JSK acquired for $90,162 USD.MI Cape Town invested in Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, securing him for $156,274 USD, and added West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer for $90,162 USD. Proteas Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma, who has helped Sunrisers Eastern Cape to two championships, will also join the Pretoria Capitals for his third SA20 season.SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith described the auction as a demonstration of the league’s blend of world-class players alongside South Africa’s emerging cricket talent. He said, “Jason Rowles was the highlight of the day for me. Seeing an 18-year-old spark the biggest bidding battle of the day tells you how much the franchises believe in the next generation. It was only last year that he was participating in the Final of the rain Schools SA20 and today he will get to be a part of a squad consisting of some of the world’s best T20 stars. That’s the pathway we set out to build, and it’s hugely encouraging to see it working.”Three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape completed their 19-player squad by adding Proteas left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England all-rounder Craig Overton. They join a pace attack that includes Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne, and Lutho Sipamla. MI Cape Town boosted their seam bowling resources by re-signing New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult and acquiring 21-year-old Oliver Whitehead. Joburg Super Kings further expanded their global reach by signing Andries Gous from the USA and Blessing Muzarabani from Zimbabwe.Smith added, “It’s also really pleasing to see so many Proteas players being picked up today. A strong League and a strong national team go hand in hand, and today was a good example of that.” The SA20 Season 5 tournament will commence on January 17, 2027, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape hosting Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha in a rematch of last season’s final.
