Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Saturday, October 31, 2026, ordered the immediate suspension of the Deputy Jail Superintendent at Theni District Prison alongside 16 correctional staff following a major security lapse that allowed 17 undertrial prisoners to escape earlier this week. The disciplinary action directly targets Deputy Jail Superintendent (In-Charge) N. Ramalingam, who had been serving in the role since August 2024. A total of 17 prison personnel have been placed under suspension pending a formal departmental inquiry into administrative failures and lapses in security monitoring.Tactical Escape via Staged Emergency. The incident occurred on Monday night, October 26, when 17 remand prisoners lodged in a single cell staged a fake medical emergency, claiming one of the inmates was suffering an epileptic seizure. When duty guards unlocked the cell to administer medical aid, the prisoners launched a coordinated assault, overpowered the staff, seized the main gate keys, and fled into nearby forested areas in Aranjanaipudur.Logistical Evasion: Escaping on a borrowed motorcycle towards Uthamapalayam, the fugitives used a stranger’s telephone in Ammachipuram to coordinate financial and vehicular support from external associates.Combing Operation & Recapture: Tamil Nadu Police deployed 17 specialized teams, five Special Task Force (STF) units, four special police battalions, and thermal-imaging drones across dense forest cover. All 17 escapees were subsequently recaptured in phased operations and remanded to judicial custody.Systemic Security Upgrades and Administrative Reshuffle. The Theni security breach arrived amidst heightened scrutiny over state prison administration, coming just days after two high-profile convicts temporarily escaped from Puzhal Central Prison near Chennai on October 20.In response to the dual incidents, the state government transferred Director General of Police (DGP) – Prisons and Correctional Services Dr. Sandeep Rai Rathore on Thursday. Chief Minister Vijay has mandated rigorous state-wide security assessments across all correctional facilities, directing the installation of advanced CCTV networks and the transfer of high-risk prisoners to maximum-security complexes across Tamil Nadu
