Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Forest Minister, Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, ordered a detailed inquiry into the unnatural deaths of around 50 elephants this year.
The minister has directed the Additional Chief Secretary of Forest, Environment & Climate Change, Satyabrat Sahu, to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report within a month. The investigation aims to identify the causes behind these deaths and hold negligent officials accountable.Minister Khuntia emphasized the need for urgent protective measures and greater accountability among forest officials. “The state government has been implementing various steps to prevent such incidents, including the deployment of Gaja Sathis and Rapid Action Teams. However, more care and sincerity are required to ensure a safe environment for our elephants,” he stated.The All-Odisha Elephant Census-2024 revealed a population of 2,098 elephants across 38 forest divisions, highlighting the importance of safeguarding these majestic creatures.
