New Delhi, 14/4: The number of seats in Lok Sabha may be increased to 850 seats – 815 for states and the remaining for union territories – from existing 550 while proposing no change to the upper limit of 500 seats in Assemblies, a contentious bill to ammend the constitution.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 has also proposed that the one-third quota for women should also be implemented after a delimitation following the “latest published census”, allowing the government to make Census 2011 as the base.
