Bhubaneswar: The prime accused in the brutal assault on a couple in Berhampur’s Giri Road area, was injured during a police encounter conducted by Town Police on Tamana Road late Wednesday night.According to police, Town Police carried out the operation on Tamana Road, where Sahu sustained bullet wounds to both knees and one hand. He was promptly shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.It is learnt that several associates linked to the case remain at large, and intensive efforts are underway to track and apprehend them. The encounter forms part of a heightened crackdown following the shocking incident that sparked widespread public outrage across the city. Earlier, authorities had arrested two other accused—Raj Malhotra and Lingaraj Samal.During the probe, police recovered two scooters, a stick believed to have been used in the assault, and a mobile phone from their possession.It is pertinent to mention that the assault occurred on the night of May 18 in Berhampur’s Giri Road area. Umesh Rath, the victim, was riding a scooter with his female friend when a group of assailants intercepted them. The attackers allegedly dragged Umesh onto the Road and beat him severely with sticks in full public view.Rath suffered critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Visakhapatnam. Videos of the violent incident circulated rapidly on social media, triggering strong public anger and raising serious questions about law and order in the city.
