Five villagers arrested for killing wild bear in Malkangiri

Malkangiri, June 20: The Forest Department has arrested five villagers in connection with the death of a wild bear in Mathili area of Malkangiri district.The incident occurred on June 17 near Daiguda village under the Mathili forest range when the bear was crossing a road and allegedly came under attack by a group of locals. The animal sustained grievous injuries after being beaten with sticks and pelted with stones.Forest officials rushed to the spot, rescued the injured bear and provided medical treatment. However, the animal succumbed to its injuries while undergoing treatment.Following an investigation into the incident, the Forest Department identified and arrested five villagers. The accused have been forwarded to court and booked under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act.Confirming the arrests, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Malkangiri said strict action has been taken against those involved in the killing of the protected wild animal.
