Bhubaneswar, July 16: The Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has successfully executed the state’s first multi-organ transplant procedure at its facility.
The donor (37), Soumya Ranjan Behera, a resident of Nayagarh, was admitted to KIMS on July 10 after suffering a brain stroke. Following sustained counselling efforts, his family agreed to donate his organs, turning their personal tragedy into a lifesaving gift for others.
During the retrieval procedure, two kidneys and the liver were harvested. One kidney was sent to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, while the other kidney and the liver were transplanted at KIMS itself, offering new hope to critically ill patients.
Rabindra Kumar Behera, the donor’s elder brother, expressed the family’s bittersweet emotions, saying: “I have lost my younger brother but I have got two new brothers who have got a new life with the organs.”
This supreme act of generosity was solemnly honoured by KIMS management with a wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the donor. A formal guard of honour is planned during Soumya Ranjan Behera’s cremation at Puri.
