How DAV Vedanta International School Is Changing the Landscape of Education in Kalahandi

Bhubaneswar: Kalahandi, a region once known for its tales of poverty and hardship, has
undergone immense transformation in the last two decades. Since Vedanta established its
alumina refinery, a quiet revolution has taken root. A cornerstone of this development is the
DAV Vedanta International School – the district's first English medium school.
Back in 2006, when the school opened its doors, the vision was simple: education is the
bedrock of progress. In a tribal region like Kalahandi, the need extended beyond
classrooms; it was about building bridges to the wider world. From early childhood to senior
secondary, the school became a nurturing space, where dormant dreams began to stir.
With over 1,300 students—83% from nearby communities—DAV Vedanta International
School is shaping a new future for education in Kalahandi. Many students are first-
generation learners, stepping into classrooms equipped with smart boards, computer labs,
and science facilities, gaining access to opportunities once out of reach in this remote
district.
The impact is clear: in 2023, the school ranked first among all DAV institutions, with 12th
standard students averaging 90.7% and achieving a 100% board exam pass rate, with many
scoringabove 80%. Among its success stories is Saloni Prasad, who graduated with a 9.6
CGPA in 10th standard, went on to pursue a master's in biotechnology, and now works as a
Project Associate at ICMR-NIN, Hyderabad. “My alma mater nurtured my skills, values, and
a lifelong love of learning,” she shares—echoing the journey of many students empowered
by the school.
Education is a fundamental component of development, particularly in remote and
underserved areas. It empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for
participation in the broader economy and society. In regions like Kalahandi, efforts are
focused on improving educational opportunities to integrate communities into the national
mainstream. Apart from the DAV Vedanta International School, collaborations with the
Government of Odisha under the Mo School Abhiyan have facilitated the conversion of 22
schools into modern centres of learning, incorporating cutting-edge technology. Moreover,
initiatives such as the Vedanta Mini Science Center and the Vedanta Gyanashree and
Meritorious Scholarships further support the goal of recognizing academic achievement and
making science education accessible. These efforts collectively contribute to the educational
development of the region.
The impact extends far beyond the school's boundaries. It inspires generations to aspire for
more. The dust of Kalahandi, once symbolic of neglect, is now being stirred by the footsteps
of educated, empowered young individuals. They are the architects of a new narrative,
where education is not a privilege, but a fundamental right. The gentle spark ignited in
Lanjigarh is illuminating the entire region, proving that even in the most remote corners,
change is possible, and education is the enduring key.
