Bhubneswar : JSW BPSL has launched its flagship initiative – SPEED (Sustainability Planning for Energy Efficiency and
Decarbonization) – at its Sambalpur Works. The program is unique & one of its kind in India’s steel sector
to adopt a structured, theme-based roadmap for energy efficiency and decarbonization.
The initiative was inaugurated by Shri Umesh Rai, Chief Operating Officer, JSW BPSL, in the presence of
senior leadership team, including Shri Prakash Sapa, Sr. VP-Operations, Shri J.P. Singh, VP & Head HR,
Shri Manoj Patwari – VP, Shri Vikas Jain – VP and Shri Manoj Kumar Singh – VP along with departmental
heads and employees.
Speaking at the launch, Shri Rai emphasized that SPEED would serve as a structured roadmap to drive
energy efficiency, optimize resource utilization, reduce emissions & embed sustainability practices
across operations.
As the first step, JSW BPSL, in collaboration with Forbes Marshall as Knowledge Partner, conducted a
Workshop on Steam Energy Conservation – the first theme under SPEED for the month of August 2025.
The session focused on improving steam generation and utilization, reducing thermal losses, and adopting
modern technologies to enhance efficiency. An additional awareness session was held for engineers,
boiler operators, and maintenance teams to encourage wider participation.
SPEED will run from August 2025 to March 2026, with each month dedicated to a key theme of energy and
sustainability. The initiative has been designed and is being led by the Energy Management Team at JSW
BPSL, ensuring a structured approach supported by active employee involvement. By covering critical
areas of energy use through focused monthly themes, the program aims to deliver significant reductions
in both energy consumption and carbon footprint.
With SPEED, JSW BPSL reaffirms its commitment to responsible and sustainable steelmaking, while
setting new benchmarks for energy efficiency in the Indian steel sector.
