On 14 th May 2025, JSW Foundation, in collaboration with Pratham Education Foundation, inaugurated the Summer Camp and School Readiness Mela at Gumkarma, Ghichamura under its flagship community development initiative, the Hamara Gaon Project. The event marks the beginning of an engaging summer learning experience for children across 20 peripheral villages of the JSW BPSL Plant, spread over 5 Gram Panchayats. The initiative was formally inaugurated by Mr. Vishal Raj, Head CSR, JSW Foundation – Sambalpur & Jharsuguda, in the presence of Mr. Rajiv Kisan, Sarpanch – Ghichamura, along with representatives from the Block Education Office, Rengali including CRCCs from Laida, Lapanga and Katarbaga clusters. The programme comprises two key components aimed at enhancing early education. The Summer Camp, designed for students of Classes 4 to 6, focuses on building foundational learning through fun, activity based sessions conducted by trained community volunteers. Meanwhile, the School Readiness Mela targets newly enrolled students of Classes 1 and 2, assessing their learning levels and equipping their mothers with specially designed school readiness books. This home-based support ensures that children are adequately prepared for school by the end of summer. During the event, learning kits were distributed to all selected and trained volunteers from the 20 villages. These volunteers will facilitate regular sessions with children in their respective communities. For the School Readiness Mela, an initial assessment will be conducted to understand the child’s learning level, followed by another round at the end of summer to measure progress. The inauguration event saw enthusiastic participation from ward members, school representatives, community members, and students, reflecting a strong sense of ownership and collaboration among stakeholders. This initiative underlines JSW Foundation’s commitment to holistic child development and quality education through community-driven, sustainable interventions.
