The couple decided to marry despite opposition from their families and community, as they belonged to different castes. While Maheswar belongs to the Mali community, the woman is from the Rana community.Facing resistance, the couple reportedly left their homes and stayed outside for a few days. Later, when Maheswar attempted to return home with his wife, the Mali community agreed to accept the marriage only under certain conditions.As part of these conditions, Maheswar was allegedly tonsured in front of community members. He was also asked to host a community feast and pay a fine of Rs 90,000. The event was organised at a location away from the village, near a hill close to Machhara. Members of the community, including elders, youths and educated individuals, attended the feast.After the rituals and conditions were fulfilled, the bride was finally allowed to enter her husband’s home with the approval of community elders.Members of the Mali community stated that such penalties are not new and are part of long-standing norms for those who marry outside their caste. They maintained that these rules have existed for years and will continue in the future.
