OPGC Rises to 2nd Place Among State Sector Thermal Power Plants across India with Record Station PLF 83.8%

Jharsuguda, 19 July 2025: Odisha Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (OPGC) has soared to the 2nd spot among all state sector power plants in India in FY 2024-25—thanks to a stellar Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 83.80%. This achievement not only places OPGC at 19th position in thermal power generation across all Indian power plants but also marks a significant lead over the national average PLF of 69.47%, announced Mr. Sukanta Mohapatra, Sr. Vice President (Operations), at a press meet held in Jharsuguda.

Celebrating the company’s remarkable year, Mr. Mohapatra highlighted OPGC’s journey of operational excellence and its future expansion plans. The company’s IB Thermal Power Station at Banharpali, Jharsuguda—comprising of two 210 MW units and two super critical 660 MW units (total: 1740 MW)—operates with strong plant efficiency including receiving of prestigious awards, of late:

    • CII Excellent Energy Efficient Unit Award 2024
    • Top Performer Award in the State Level “Energy Conservation Award 2024.
    • Silver” award in “Leadership in Digital Transformation” by Economic Times Energy Leadership Awards-2025.
    • “dun & bradstreet Public Sector Excellence Awards 2024” in Power Generation among all state PSUs.
    • National Level award for “HR Excellence” organized by the World HRD Congress.
    • Best Power Generation Company of the Year by Economic Times Energy Leadership Awards 2023.

Joined by MD Mr. Kedar Ranjan Pandu, Director-Operations Mr. A.R. Dash, Sr. VP-Operations Mr. Sukanta Mohapatra, and Sr. GM (HR) Mr. Subashish Mukherjee and other senior officials, the leadership unveiled OPGC’s ambitious future roadmap:

  • Future Expansion: Stage-3, Units 5 & 6, are on track for commissioning by June 2031. Tenders will be floated in July 2025, with  a target to award the contract by December 2025.
  • Renewable Foray: In line with RGO compliance, a 50 MW solar plant will soon rise on reclaimed ash pond land, with contract awards expected by December 2025. Plans are also underway for a 2.5 MW solar installation on the top of intake channel, and a visionary 2 GW solar-wind hybrid project to power Odisha’s green future.
  • Renovation and modernization of Units 1 & 2 (31 years old units), with an investment of Rs. 757 crore, aims to extend their lifecycle by another 15 years—completion slated for December 2026.

Director-Operations Mr. A.R. Dash emphasized that ongoing and upcoming projects would not only power the grid but also fuel local employment and drive community development through OPGC’s CSR initiatives.

Responding to questions on environmental stewardship, MD, Mr. Pandu reiterated OPGC’s strict adherence to statutory norms and pollution control protocols, especially fly ash transportation complying pollution control norms, and reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sustainable and responsible operations.
