Sacred Chandan Yatra set to begin on 20th April

Puri, Ap 2: The highly anticipated Chandan Yatra will commence on 20th April 2026, marking a significant event in the religious calendar of Odisha. From the Narendra Pond, five boats-Nanda, Bhadrā, Baijayanti, Bimala, and Mangala-have been carefully prepared for the occasion. These boats will carry the revered Shree Jagannath as part of the traditional Boat Festival.The boats, which were previously submerged in the water, have now been lifted and readied by the dedicated Sevaks to ensure the smooth execution of the ritual. The Chandan Yatra, a sacred event, holds immense religious significance, with devotees eagerly awaiting its arrival each year.This annual ritual is one of the most cherished celebrations in Odisha, with preparations underway and an atmosphere of excitement and devotion filling the region.The Chandan Yatra spans 42 days, with the most significant phase lasting 21 days, during which the deities are taken to a sacred pond for a ceremonial sandalwood bath. The remaining 21 days are observed inside the temple complex, where additional rituals are carried out by the Sevaks.Key Rituals and Celebrations:First Phase (Bahara Chandan): The deities of Madanamohana, Bhudevi, and Sridevi—representing Lord Jagannath and other temple deities—are taken in grand processions to Narendra Pokhari (a sacred pond). There, they are placed on beautifully adorned boats and ritually cruised across the water.Second Phase (Bhitara Chandan):The second phase of the ceremony is performed inside the temple, where sandalwood paste is applied to the idols, accompanied by additional rituals conducted by the Sevaks.
