Bhubaneswar, Sept. 24: The liver and both kidneys of a 43-year-old
accident victim were harvested at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM
Hospital here and sent to different hospitals for transplantation on
Wednesday.
Bablu Dhal of Barada village under Tihidi block of Bhadrak district had
met with an accident near Tangi in Cuttack district on September 18 after
which he was undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital at
Cuttack.
He was shifted to IMS and SUM Hospital two days later but was declared
brain dead on September 22 while under treatment. Dhal’s family members
then decided to donate his organs saying the same could help save the lives of
patients elsewhere.
The hospital authorities got in touch with the State Organ and Tissue
Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) subsequently which paved the way for
harvesting of the liver and two kidneys. While one of the kidneys were sent to
SCB Medical College Hospital for transplantation, the other one was taken to
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar for another
waiting patient.
The liver was shifted a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for the same
purpose.
“This is the fifth time that organs have been harvested from brain dead
patients in our hospital with the approval of family members,” the hospital’s
Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar said.
The deceased was accorded a guard of honour in the hospital premises
on Wednesday before the body was handed over to the family members.
Besides Prof. (Dr.) Samantasinghar, Prof. Ms. Pushpanjali Rout, Deputy General
Manager (Operations), Ms. Kaberi Rani Sahu, Nursing Superintendent, Mr.
Sagar Paikray, Junior Hospital Aministrator and others were present.
