Supreme Court issues notice to Centre on PIL challenging certain provisions of IT Rules, 2009

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Central Government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging certain rules of Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2009. According to reports, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre on a PIL challenging certain rules of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009. The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Central Government within a maximum period of six weeks, further reports clarified in this regard. It is worth mentioning that, the plea of the Software Freedom Law Centre stated that prior to taking down information from platforms like ‘X’, notice should be given to its originator or creator. The case was related to the process of internet shutdown and blocking access to information.
