Mumbai,15/1: Virat Kohli has stepped down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team after the series defeat against South Africa. Kohli took to Twitter to make the mega announcement. He had replaced MS Dhoni as the full-time captain in the 2014/15 season. With 40 wins in 68 matches, Kohli ends his captaincy stint as the most successful Indian Test captain.
The former skipper thanked BCCI, former head coach Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni in his statement on social media. Under him, India became a mighty force and dominated every team at home. In 2015/16 season, India defeated Sri Lanka at their home and then conquered South Africa.
In 2016, India went on to defeat West Indies and then went on a winning run in the home season, which comprised 13 Test matches. India won all the 4 series during the season. Their only defeat came against Australia in Pune.
In 2017/18 season, India registered back-to-back series wins over Sri Lanka. Even though Kohli continued his purple patch with the bat, the year 2018 wasn’t a great year for him on the captaincy front as India lost away series to England and South Africa.
Kohli bounced back strongly in 2018/19 and became the first-ever Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia. The series win remains to be one of the most decorated moments in the history of Indian cricket. For next one year, India went on a winning streak and defeated West Indies (2-0), South Africa (3-0) and Bangladesh (2-0).
