JHARASUGUDA, March 19: In a bid to alleviate traffic woes along National Highway-49, authorities in Jharsuguda undertook rigorous measures on Monday targeting illegal parking, a persistent issue exacerbating road congestion and safety concerns.
Sadar police spearheaded the operation, seizing two SUVs, a truck, and a bus while detaining four individuals allegedly involved in unauthorized parking activities along the bustling highway stretch between Ib Bridge and Prasanna Panda Road. The crackdown follows mounting concerns over blocked roadways, leading to heightened accident risks.
“Illegal parking along National Highway-49 and State Highway-10, including the Biju Expressway, has been a recurring nightmare, causing severe traffic disruptions, delays, and heightened accident risks,” remarked IIC Swapnarani Gochhayat.
The situation has garnered attention at District Road Safety Committee meetings, with the District Magistrate’s directives to impose fines failing to yield desired outcomes due to lax enforcement.
The recent crackdown signals a renewed commitment to curbing unlawful parking practices that impede smooth vehicular flow, especially along routes frequented by hundreds of coal-laden vehicles from IB Valley Coalfields and numerous heavy-duty trucks.
Furthermore, the prevalence of non-compliant heavy vehicles poses additional hazards, with many stranded without proper illumination, further compromising road safety.
As authorities intensify efforts to enforce regulations, stakeholders remain hopeful that sustained action will yield tangible improvements, reducing traffic snarls and enhancing safety along vital transportation arteries.
