5-member team of JPC on Waqf Amendment Bill reaches Bhubaneswar, hearing on Monday
The Joint Parliamentary Committee, chaired by Jagatambika Pal, is in Odisha to discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill. Members include Aparajita Sarangi and Ghulam Nabi. The bill proposes 44 amendments.
A five-member team of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) scrutinizing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 arrived in Odisha and is scheduled to hold a meeting in the state capital on Monday.Among the committee members are JPC chairperson Jagatambika Pal, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi and MP Ghulam Nabi. Talking to reporters, JPC member Aparajita Sarangi said, “Speaker Om Birla has constituted the Joint Parliamentary Committee that consists of 31 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members. In this bill, there will be 44 amendments.”“At least 38L acre land is in the possession of Waqf Board. So, it is our duty to correct the governance and the administration and this is a huge step of the Modi government towards it,” she added.A day back, the Committee was in Guwahati and held discussions with state government representatives, minority commissions, Muslim organisations, local Waqf boards, and other organisations. The hearings were also held in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.From Guwahati, the panel reached Bhubaneswar and will then leave for Kolkata, Patna, and Lucknow during their tour, it was learnt.
